Dirty Laundry Diaries: Secret Lovers

You then come to a place that you want to be more than a hush... Am I the only one who feels like buffing with the obnoxious ‘couple goals’ on social media. There is a certain amount of posts as a couple that should be deemed illegal. And no, it’s not jealousy, relationships should have a level of being personal.  "If I like you, I will not follow you on social media and neither should you.  " I have been one of those people who seeks to keep their relationships private. In actual fact I have a social media policy with whomever I date...let’s not follow each other. If I like you, I will not follow you on social media and neither should you. There’s something about people’s social media persona that I find unattractive. I would rather base my attraction to the person that I’m seeing on IRL activities. "Navigate the relationship through your own perceptions and not what your friends or society dictates." I’m also a believer in keeping th...

Dirty Laundry Diaries: Hurts Like a Mother F***er

My humanity will let me hurt as much as I can and be unapologetic for it… I never thought that I would find myself at this place again. Over the past few years, I learnt the word ‘No’ and embraced my power to reject mediocrity. Be it work, life and even romantic relationships. Sigh! I recently found myself breaking almost every rule of every self-help book that I’ve read. Reading is supposed to empower you with knowledge and also help you with making better life choices! Anyway, I recently had to break it off with some guy because of ‘incorrect assumptions’, when will I ever learn? "In my own rule book,   CONSISTENCY is very important." In my own rule book, CONSISTENCY is very important. The moment that there is lack of consistency during the dating period or in a relationship it’s, “Off with his head” (In the voice of the queen of hearts). Sic! But what started off well, ended up like the familiar script that I have writing about for a long time. As Whitney ...

Script My Life: Love By the 10th Date

Finding love shouldn’t be a duty but it should be a journey that you enjoy the ride while you get to it... I don’t remember when was the last time I related to a number of female characters in one movie. I finally watched Lifetime movie ‘Love By the 10th Date’.  The trailer to the movie, written and directed by Nzingha Stewart, enticed me for a good chick flick...about women of colour. The all star cast includes the gorgeous Kelly Rowland, Meagan Good, Keri Hilson and Kellee Smith. We also see Cat Deely, Joshua T Jackson, Andra Fuller and UnReal’s Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman. The story line follows a group of young, successful black friends who work for a high end, digital magazine Nina. The protagonist is Gabrielle Fateful a.k.a Gabby played by Meagan Good. Gabby is a graphic designer at Nina whose love life is an actual struggle. The scene that kickstarts the plot of the movie is when Gabby goes out for dinner with friends and workmates, Margot (Kelly Rowland), Bi...

Script My Life: Single Moms Club

My desire is to raise a healthy, responsible human being... ...who won't need a shrink, go to jail or end up in the grave (untimely). January disease and the scorching African weather had me indoors over the weekend. Honestly, I'm nothing but nonchalant. Staying indoors gave me time to watch television. In between naps and sharing the remote with my nine year old, I found time to watch a few good flicks. One that spoke to me is Tyler Perry's 'Single Moms Club'. I had watched it twice before however this time I felt a strong connection to the story line. I have never made it a secret about the challenges of being a parent, single and raising a child on my own. God has been good to me that members of my family have supported me. During the hardest times, they backed me financially. I have a wonderful cousin who made the early stages of motherhood bearable as I was a complete headless chicken. Tyler Perry has always understood me, he...

Single Ladies: Again!

Sparks flew like fireworks on the 4th of July but it obviously fizzled.  Fireworks though magical can never replace fire which is an eternal need... Wave to all my single ladies! How have you been mes chere? I apologise for taking such a long hiatus from bearing my experiences and journey with you but I resume my story. I won't bore you with the in-betweens but like old girlfriends, I'll share an epiphany.  We all have at different parts of our lives experienced a different type of crush. Either it was on that celebrity whose poster you had up your wall. Or that guy you shared the same class with. Maybe your annoying neighbour little Eddie, who now isn't so little and is far from getting under your skin. Oh yes, that very cute lecturer whose mind boggles you or that hot co-worker who makes it so hard to concentrate when they step into the office. We have all been there or are there. No shame about it. The big question is what to do with that...

Worth the Wait...The C Card

According to actress Yvonne Orji's TEDx talk, "The wait is sexy". The irony of the 'Insecure' actress who plays the very sexual Molly Carter on the show. Oh yeah, it took the first episodes of season 2, for me to return to the first one.(I should be ashamed of my grown self!) 'Insecure' is one of the best television series by people of colour. I absolutely love how relatable and honest it is. I can relate to Issa's 'awkward black girl' moments because I'm that woman. By the way, I don’t think that Issa and Lawrence should get back together. It's over, totally! Anyway, all respect to 34 year old Yvonne Orji who's still a virgin. She's my hero! It takes a lot of discipline and courage to safeguard one's 'V' card. We live in the 'hook up' age where dating is dead and virginity is as extinct as the dodo. With TV shows such as 'Teen Mum', not to mention the examples of teen celebrities who have bee...

How Do I Live?

"Sorry, ngiyayethuka!", I apologized. My heart's racing whilst my stomach churns with fear. A colleague had spotted me and just wanted to say hi. How do I explain that I'm not yet over it? He looked at me shocked! I reacted as if it was a stranger who was about to violate me...again! It’s been two months now since I was robbed but every time that I go home, it feels as if it was yesterday. It was a Friday night when I usually try to cover all my weekend work so that I can enjoy a weekend off. Logistically, I save by not commuting to work over the weekend. So as usual I was working until slightly late. This particular Friday I had made plans to go sleep over at my sister's however since my aunt had travelled that day I had to reschedule. A cousin of mine was house sitting but due to their history of irresponsibility, someone else had to monitor them. I would handle Friday before allowing someone else to take over until my aunt's return. I covered m...
