MTV VMA Review: Missy Elliott, Supa Dupa Fly!

Yaaaas queen! Joy overwhelmed me by just watching Missy Elliott's MTV VMA performance. It's been 16 years since Missy last performed at the VMAs. That year, Missy was joined by Nelly Furtado and Timbaland, as they proved to us what genius looks like. Missy opened her performance with her latest single, "Throw It Back" before throwing fans back to her hits from yesteryear. She performed a medley that included 'The Rain', 'Get Ur Freak On', 'One Minute Man', 'Pass that Dutch' and 'Lose Control'. With each performance the 4-time Grammy winner invoked looks from each music video. She also reunited with dancer, actress and singer, Alyson Stoner, who remains a superb dancer. For those who aren't in the know, Alyson started dancing for Missy when she was a little girl. She became a staple in most of Missy's music videos. In 2015, Alyson paid tribute to the legend with a viral video of Missy's greatest hits. Missy

I Was A Mean Girl

It doesn't hurt to be tolerant...     ...because 'nice' is for biscuits. Maturity is a very demanding human trait. It requires accountability and humility. You have to be willing to forgo being a winner and accept compromise. But maturity requires a willingness to change, something very few of us are willing to do. It's story time and boy do I have an interesting story for you. I'm not really sure about the exact time, but I can trace back to fourth grade. I was on this group in class with the meanest people.  There was this girl called Emily. She was tall, lanky with attitude. Not necessarily the brightest crayon in the box, in terms of academics. Emily made the first two terms of fourth grade unbearable. I often would cry to my father about it. Emily was the definition of a mean girl. My dad once said that she's being mean to me because I'm smarter than her. Might have been true, but that didn't help my social life at school. Com

Motivation, That Black Girl Magic!

My brown baby can see the magic in her complexion! Normani has just made my Friday! Today happens to be my daughter's birthday! Oh, yes I finally have a 'tween'. I'm just two years shy from a having a teenager. And with a teenager there's the need to be 'cool' and relevant. This is the stage where formation of a future adult occurs. These are impressionable years. To some extent, I ignored the status quo. It's none of my business because it's a broken record with so much noise. It's deja vu without effective results, so my ignorance is bliss! In other news, yes my little girl is a young lady now! And guess what, a member of one of her favourite girl groups just dropped a banger. Though not yet age appropriate for her due to the lyrics, Normani's 'Motivation' video is everything! Imagine a brown girl breaking the internet! She's earned the applause of her peers and even praise from legends such as Missy Elliott. Y'a

Single Ladies: Type Yamudhara

Hello single ladies! I heart all of you on this #WCW! If nobody is crushing on you, I send out mad love to you! You are gorgeous, formidable and alluring! As a music lover and critic, I come across so much music. I might hate a lot of things about Zimbabwe, but music isn't one of them. In the past decade there has been a great improvement in music in this country. Gone are the days of tone-deaf producers and off-pitch singers. Yep, people are doing the ting! I'm playing music off my playlist and then I come across the rapper Marcques' music. I won't lie, Marcques has that panty dropping voice - think Barry White, Don Cornelius, or DJ Sbu. While he has a new single out, I was playing his 2017 single off the Veryus project. Titled, ' Type Yamudhara ', the hip hop/trap single is all about the type of girl that the protagonist is feeling. I started thinking...what's my type? Whose type am I? We have all pondered the above questions, maybe once or twice. W

I'm Right Here: 10 Places To Find Her

Hey boys! It's Monday again! This month isn't about y'all but where would you be without me? One of my male colleagues recently shared that he finds it hard to find a decent woman. I asked him to define 'decent'. In his words, "A girl who's not swimming in the shallow end. She is supportive and well mannered. She is someone that I wouldn't be afraid to introduce to my mother or any of my family. She actually doesn't have to be Instagram hot, just look and smell clean." Oh, my! This was before a few other guys invaded the conversation and weighed in their thoughts. They all highlighted that there are more fantasy girls than wifey material. One cited that even the so called 'ugly girls' (not my handwriting), are riding on that slay queen, finesse train. They even went in on the church girls, calling them the 'unheathen sluts'. Whoa, that's a bit harsh. I then posed this question, 'Where are you finding these girl

Script My Life: How To Be Single

Being single is the best time to live your best life! Yes, I have revived the 'Single Ladies' series by public demand. During the hiatus, I have been mingling with different women from all walks of life. I'm seeing that the equation of single women to the ones getting married is actually balanced. Yes, girls are getting themselves that ring-on-it. But there is still that portion who are still on the singles bus; crying, begging and praying to get off the bus. Well ladies, I pulled out a flick for y'all. Actually, today's 'Script My Life' film can be universal. Yes boys, you are slightly included in the plot. Our case study is 'How to Be Single', as we learn how to be single. So let's go! Starring Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades franchise), Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect), Leslie Mann (The Other Woman) and Alison Brie, the movie looks at four female protagonists who are single. The movie starts off with a party theme, 'Intoxicated'. As

Just Because I'm a Woman

"My mistakes are no worse than yours, just because I'm a woman." - Dolly Parton I breathe an old soul in my being and I blame it entirely on my daddy. This weekend was rather moody with the grey clouds and my personal melancholy. I was lighting candles and going through old photos as yet again, I remembered my parents' death anniversary. I truly believed in love stories when my father passed away on the 4th of August 1999. This is five years and a day after my mother's passing. He had followed his love. Over the years, I have fought with God about this robbery. I often question faith. I am not going to get into it on this platform. Today, in remembrance of the two beautiful souls whom I called mum and dad, I recollect memories. The Beach If I am to wed, the ceremony will be by the beach. When I die, please scatter my ashes by the sea. My next birthday, I am definitely celebrating it in Vilanculos. It's only when I came across photos of my family by

Script My Life: The Greatest Roles

Cheers to a new month, new season and more scripts... I really need new flicks to watch! I will admit that I haven't caught up with the late 2018 and early 2019 movies. But I know that after this blog post, y'all will hook me up. XOXO in advance! We are in the month of August! The second month in the second half of the year! A happy birthday to all the Leos and Virgos! Some of the greats were born this month including my beautiful daughter, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. August babies are strong willed and have leadership bred in them. They are just a forceful lot! In the Shona language, August is ' Nyamavhuvhu ' which loosely translated means 'windy'. August babies aren't gentle breezes, they are the tornados and hurricanes; but we love them still! The month itself on this side of the hemisphere is windy! But the wind comes to somewhat renew and pave way for the brief spring season (in Africa, of course!) Wrapping up July, and starting o
