Script My Life: Perfect Find

Find love in the most unexpected places... ...and in unusual faces. As someone who's been avoiding warm, fuzzy and so-called 'romantic', I found my 'perfect find', I think. Imagine a romantic comedy that has you laughing, crying, and feeling all the feels? Well Netflix latest flick, romantic comedy, 'The Perfect Find', has nostalgia meets clichĂ© love stories and great visuals. Based on a screenplay by Leigh Davenport, and directed by Numa Perrier, 'The Perfect Find' is based on the book of the same name by Tia Williams. The film stars Gabrielle Union, Keith Powers, Janet Hubert, Aisha Hinds, D.B. Woodside, La La Anthony and Gina Torres. Played by Gabrielle Union, the film follows Jenna Jones, a forty-year-old beauty journalist who moves back to New York City, after being dumped by her boyfriend of 10 years, Brian (Woodside). She asks her rival Darcy (Torres) for a job at Darzine and is offered the Creative Director position on a three-month trial bas...

Script My Life: Book Club: The Next Chapter

Life is worth living to the fullest but you must choose to live. Phew! I'm going through the most, I need divine intervention. Since I'm currently not a fan of anything romantic, I am living vicariously through rich, mature white women. I really don't want to preoccupy myself with anything to do with struggle, or current affairs. I just want to escape. And guess what, I found just the right flick. I found, 'Book Club: The Next Chapter.' This is a heartwarming and entertaining romantic comedy directed by Bill Holderman, and serves as a sequel to the 2018 film 'Book Club.' The movie features an all-star cast, including Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen, along with Craig T. Nelson, Giancarlo Giannini, Andy GarcĂa, and Don Johnson. The movie follows the four friends in the book club, who reunite in person after COVID-19 pandemic forced them to switch their monthly meetings to Zoom calls. Meet Vivian (Fonda), Sharon (Bergen), Diane (...

Script My Life: Miracle Before Christmas

A little Christmas magic is all we need to change our lives. I love binge watching holiday films. They give me that fuzz and hope for something better. This particular season I need more than just the feeling, I need the miracle. With the plethora of holiday flicks, for our Christmas script my life, I choose Miracle Before Christmas.

Script My Life: Marry Me

If you want something different, you have to do something different! Woo, Jennifer Lopez really grated the cheese on this rom-com but I love it! Yes, this Valentines day, J Lo reminds us of all our fantasies of what really love should be. Jenny has always been a girl who loves love. So art somewhat imitates life. Following her reunion with former fiancĂ©, Ben Affleck, we are definitely seeing Jenny from the Block 2.0. Who knew that getting back together with 'the one that got away' two decades later would revive romantically in J lo? We all know that Jennifer loves to be booed up. She's been married three times, engaged five or six (I've lost count). I believe relationship experts would consider her a love addict. But that's none of our business! Just in time for Valentines day, a romantic comedy simply titled, "Marry Me". The stars Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, Maluma, John Bradley, Sarah Silverman, and Chloe Coleman. The movie opens with the title trac...

Script My Life: The Perfect Holiday

It's not selfish to want more! It's actually the 25th of December! Oh, you thought that I would take a break from blogging. Not at all. Today, we watch a movie together. Let's find what holiday flick gets us into the spirit. I guess you're wondering why I dialed back to an 'old' movie. Well, I haven’t properly watched this 2007 movie. Imagine it's taken me 13 whole years to watch this holiday flick starring Gabrielle Union-Wade, Morris Chestnut, and the late Charlie Murphy. For those who still haven't watched the movie 'The Perfect Holiday' - spoiler warning. The movie follows two characters who will by the magic of Christmas meet. Before I go ahead, Queen Latifah plays mother Christmas who is the 'Christmas angel'. Terrence Howard is the 'Grinch-like' character named "Bah Humbug", who opposes the 'spirit of Christmas'. We meet Benjamin (Morris Chestnut) is an aspiring songwriter who attempts to break into the mu...

Script My Life: When The Screen Got Real

Some days I feel like these filmmakers are observing my life... But then again there are seven billion people, with some I can share similar stories. Of late I've been living in my bubble. I'm oblivious to a lot of things. Some I purposely choose to ignore, others, well, let these cups pass me by.  In the past year, I have watched a plethora of films, and a new television series. One way or the other, some have spoken to me. All the movies about race relations made me both angry and sad. The rom-com had me reevaluating my perceptions of romantic relationships. And the current sermon from Pastor Mike Todd has got me thinking...I need Jesus! Over the years with the number of flicks that I have watched, others have spoken to me, more than others. Below are the times that my life was scripted: 1. Vanessa confronts her mother about being sexually abused on 'Madea's Family Reunion. My God, that part still gets to me. There's no heavier load to carry than that of unforgive...

Script My Life: Bad Hair

My relationship with hair extensions will never be the same! It's spooky season and what a time for all things that make your stomach churn, and eyes pop! For most of this series, I review romantic comedies and dramas. The big screen allows me to live vicariously through stories and characters. I can escape my mundane life and all the imperfections in between. I can be anything that I want, through whichever character that I relate to. Funny enough I love horror and thrillers! I love the adrenalin rush of frightening encounters with the paranormal, or mentally unhinged. Most horrors or thrillers often follow a generic pattern, however there those that take the cup for scares. I will never watch 'The Exorcist' and 'The Nun' again! Apart from being scary, I am not playing with all that supernatural stuff. And here we are, watching Hulu's new flick, 'Bad Hair'. Ever since the trailer, I have been religiously following the interviews. In one interview, the f...

Script My Life: Mulan

Never despise chasing a chicken on top of rooftops! Oh my, I felt like a fortune cookie right there. I'm never the one to jump onto trends. I proudly stand as the few who aren't phased by FOMO. However for the 2020 adaptation of Mulan, I had to be on point with my movie watching. Between watching the trailer and a few expectations, I wasn't sure about my reaction. I'm a staunch Disney classics fan. I am one of those ladies who grew up on the  Disney princess  trope. I love Belle, Jasmine and Tiana, although Tiana was a frog ¾ of the film. The strong willed female with a free spirit is my spirit animal. Belle read books, Jasmine wanted to see the world and Tiana was a businesswoman. Hmm, sounds like someone we know. Wink! Disney decided to offer CGI, live action versions of all the animations that most of us millennials grew up on. To be honest, I hate most their reimagined versions especially 'The Lion King'. It was so bad, I didn't watch it twice. I really ...

Script My Life: I Feel Pretty

Confidence is the key to success in everything! So stop stressing about your flaws! I don't remember when I last enjoyed a chick flick. I mean the ones whose story line aren't about people of colour. I must say that the 2018 Netflix romantic comedy, 'I Feel Pretty' was a must watch. The film stars Amy Schumer, Michelle Williams, Emily Ratajkowski , Rory Scovel , Aidy Bryant , Busy Philipps , Tom Hopper , Naomi Campbell , and Lauren Hutton . The storyline is about an insecure woman who obsesses over her appearance. Her biggest wish is to be very pretty and slim. She joins a spin class where she experiences several mishaps. After suffering a head injury, she gains extreme self-confidence in her appearance. Amy Schumer takes on the role Renee Bennett, the insecure woman. At the opening of the film, Renee experiences an injury around her Lady area at spin class. She manages the website for cosmetics firm Lily LeClaire. There's a job opening for a receptionist at the com...

Script My Life: Female Friendships & Sisterhoods

Female friendships need to come to the place of acceptance through individual differences.   Otherwise we will continue to write the narrative that women cannot get along. Female friendships , not my favourite topic. It's a complex dynamic that I am still learning. I have never hidden my personal challenges with my younger sister. As we try to go beyond sibling rivalry, what I would love most is a friendship. With the fewer female friends within my circle, our challenge is time, and really connecting with depth. With some, we have fallen into the passive-aggressive path, which we really need to work out.    As a lone ranger in femaledom, my perception of female friendships is negative. As an outsider, most female relationships tend to be riddled with conflict. It's jealousy, gossip, projection, obsession, gas lighting and a lot of small talk. I remember one time working with female cousins, where one cousin tried to get me fired. I'm sorry, I'm working on that forgivene...

Script My Life: The Kissing Booth 2

Wayment...there's a 'Kissing Booth 3'? I finally watched the highly anticipated sequel to the Netflix original, 'The Kissing Booth'. Picking up from where we left off, Noah is at Havard University, while Elle and Lee are high school seniors. Elle narrates the events that occurred during the summer break. She highlights her relationship with Noah, college application and Lee's relationship with Rachel. The cast remains the same with Joey King as Elle Evans, Joel Courtney as Lee Flynn and Jacob Elordi as Noah Flynn. In addition we have Molly Ringwald as Sarah Flynn, Meganne Young as Rachel, Taylor Zakhar Perez as Marco PenĂ£, and Maisie Richardson-Sellers as Chloe Winthrop. Elle is adjusting to the idea of a long distance relationship with Noah. She becomes the third wheel in Lee and Rachel's relationship. The film starts with Elle narrating her time with Noah before he leaves for Harvard. Her senior year starts with her classmates gossiping how she and Noah wil...

Script My Life: A Fall From Grace

I finally watched 'A Fall From Grace'.... And I don't know what y'all were complaining about, this flick was great! I am currently working from home during these perilous times of the terrifying COVID 19. The company that I work for made a conscious decision to protect its employees by permitting social distancing via staying at home. While I don't mind working in my pyjamas, this isolation would be ideal in a country with reliable electricity, a stable economy and adequate food supply. Please feel free to send donations, plus I need to make my rent, otherwise... A few months later, I finally got to view Tyler Perry’s, "A Fall From Grace". Premiered exclusively on Netflix, the film is a suspense/thriller written, produced, directed and starring Tyler Perry. Impressively, the film was shot in five days, clearly on a minimal budget. Perry is synonymous with featuring in his own movies from the Madea franchise, to 'Why Did I Get Married?', a...
