I Am She: Necole Kane

In her growth, Necole Kane has established a community that empowers women of colour. I love XONecole...actually, I breathe for it. I don't recall how I came across the blog's Instagram page, but what I do remember is falling in love. I loved the pastel layout of the artwork. I fell in love with the content. I actually found the one publication about women that I would love to write for. And in 2016, I applied for the position of a writer for the blog, unfortunately that dream didn't come true. That disappointment hasn't derailed me, I now want my own XONecole, or a platform affiliated with the community. Today queens, we celebrate a black woman who defined blogging entrepreneurship. Her name is the moniker for the blogs that she's been synonymous with. She crossed over from entertainment gossip blogging to a positive, honest platform that uplifts women especially of colour. My Shero is Maryland native, Necole Kane. I knew of Necole Kane as the founder of ...

MTV VMA Review: Missy Elliott, Supa Dupa Fly!

Yaaaas queen! Joy overwhelmed me by just watching Missy Elliott's MTV VMA performance. It's been 16 years since Missy last performed at the VMAs. That year, Missy was joined by Nelly Furtado and Timbaland, as they proved to us what genius looks like. Missy opened her performance with her latest single, "Throw It Back" before throwing fans back to her hits from yesteryear. She performed a medley that included 'The Rain', 'Get Ur Freak On', 'One Minute Man', 'Pass that Dutch' and 'Lose Control'. With each performance the 4-time Grammy winner invoked looks from each music video. She also reunited with dancer, actress and singer, Alyson Stoner, who remains a superb dancer. For those who aren't in the know, Alyson started dancing for Missy when she was a little girl. She became a staple in most of Missy's music videos. In 2015, Alyson paid tribute to the legend with a viral video of Missy's greatest hits. Missy...

Motivation, That Black Girl Magic!

My brown baby can see the magic in her complexion! Normani has just made my Friday! Today happens to be my daughter's birthday! Oh, yes I finally have a 'tween'. I'm just two years shy from a having a teenager. And with a teenager there's the need to be 'cool' and relevant. This is the stage where formation of a future adult occurs. These are impressionable years. To some extent, I ignored the status quo. It's none of my business because it's a broken record with so much noise. It's deja vu without effective results, so my ignorance is bliss! In other news, yes my little girl is a young lady now! And guess what, a member of one of her favourite girl groups just dropped a banger. Though not yet age appropriate for her due to the lyrics, Normani's 'Motivation' video is everything! Imagine a brown girl breaking the internet! She's earned the applause of her peers and even praise from legends such as Missy Elliott. Y'a...

The Do-Over

There’s something about a new year that often get people excited and often it’s the idea of a fresh start. If life was a diary or memoir then on the first day of January of the new year the entry would be, ’Page one of the book of 2017, dear diary…,” with the hope that by page 365 or 366 in a leap year, the story will have a happily ever after or at least, “In the year 2017 I have met most of my goals despite…but…happened to me, so I’m grateful for…” Well, for me 2017 feels like I have turned back the hands of time to a year which I ended up regretting and experienced events that changed my life and perceptions of life. For those who are diligent with their calendars and maybe are obsessive about the Gregorian timeline as well as solar and lunar activities would have realised that 2017 is similar to the year 2012. January 1 2012 commenced on a Sunday and January 1 2017 also began on a Sunday, so for those who have unused diaries from 2012, you might as well use those just don’t forg...

I’m Not My Hair Part 2

'Don't touch my hair When it's the feelings I wear Don't touch my soul When it's the rhythm I know Don't touch my crown They say the vision I've found Don't touch what's there When it's the feelings I wear'- Don’t touch my hair, Solange Knowles For the first time in my life I feel free… Three years ago I wrote about ‘good hair’ à la Chris Rock’s  documentary and India Arie’s song ‘ I’m not My Hair’  stating that I was amongst the many women of colour who would go to lengths to disguise their Afrocentric hair due to societal perceptions and to an extent mental oppression. In 2016, nobody, not even myself would have imagined that I would be caught spotting Bantu knots or writing a whole article on  ‘ Natural Hair 101 ’ so as to educate, as well as encourage the natural hair movement.  Yes, I am now a natural hair sister, wearing my hair in its natural form, kinks and all. Initially, it was forced upon me by the universe ...
